About Me

My Story

It might sound a bit weird and unexpected, but I never was interested in photography. Nor do I think of myself as “creative”. Growing up in Lithuania – a rather small European country, I considered myself a hardcore “science guy”. Astronomy was very much my hobby and passion. So much so that after high school I decided to pursue a science degree in my local university. I started studying physics and math. Unfortunately – or fortunately – I guess depending on how you look at it, I never finished my degree. I realised that a strict and rather boring academic career wasn’t that appealing to me. Yeah, when you are a young lad life seems quite different and rather rosy. But lessons from real life taught otherwise. It just wasn’t meant to be I guess. But despite this setback, I never lost my interest in science.
But just passively observing the night sky wasn’t enough for me. I was thinking about getting myself a camera, which I could attach to a telescope and start imaging all these mysterious objects lurking in the darkness. After some research into the camera world, I decided on Canon 450D with a kit lens. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a telescope at that time, and the idea of having my newly purchased camera sitting on the shelf and gathering dust wasn’t that attractive to me.
So I decided to go to a bookstore and buy a photography-related book to learn how to use it properly and see what else I could do with it. “Wow! That’s cool. I wonder if I could do something like that” – I said while turning the pages. The first book I bought was none other than Scott Kelby’s “The Digital Photography Book”. What I liked about it was that it wasn’t super duper technical but rather simple, clear and most importantly – funny. Which helped keep my interest in my newly found hobby. Recommend it to everyone! To say I was captivated and hooked would be an understatement.
Over upcoming months and years, I would venture outside photographing everything that caught my eye, trying to imitate great photographers and practising and improving my skills. Then, after a few years, I moved to the UK and all manner of possibilities opened up for me. Here I finally had a chance to travel more, and explore the mountainous regions of this country ( there a no hills or mountains of much significance in my country – flat as a pancake ).
Then I went on my first trip to a beautiful alpine country – Switzerland, where my love not just for photography but for mountains fully solidified. By this time I already knew what I wanted to do. I made up my mind. Photography, adventures, mountain climbing that is. It’s funny how life sometimes messes up your plans and steers you on a new, unexpected path.
Besides photography, I love a good adventure, exploration and traveling. Going to places that an ordinary person would not dare to go. Greatly enjoy outdoor activities like mountaineering and wild camping. I find that my not-so-risk-averse personality perfectly complements my passion for photography. But don’t let that deceive you into believing that I’m this always restless, always on-the-move person. There is a calm side to me as well. When I’m not somewhere in the middle of nowhere, on a mountain top or a forest, chasing the next adventure, I usually find myself at home relaxing by reading a book. I probably have more interests than I have actual physical time in a day to pursue all of them.
My other interests are in history and philosophy. I do enjoy good music too. Good ol’ rock is my fav. I’d love to learn to play the guitar one day. Hopefully, I’ll get a chance to do so. Sitting in a street bar somewhere in South America, having a drink and listening to live music… There’s nothing better than this.
